Emotional Chord Progressions (Part 4)

Introduction

In the previous parts of this series, we explored emotional harmony through sadness, nostalgia, heroism, uplifting cinematic movement, and darker techniques for creating suspense and psychological tension. But cinematic music is capable of evoking much more than emotion alone.

Some harmonic colors seem to create entire imaginary worlds.

In this fourth part, we will explore mysterious, magical, mystical, and fantasy-inspired harmonic techniques frequently used in film scores, adventure soundtracks, ambient piano music, fantasy games, and orchestral cinematic writing.

Unlike traditional harmonic approaches that strongly define emotional direction, mystical cinematic harmony often feels ambiguous, floating, ancient, dreamlike, or emotionally transcendent. Many of these sounds create the feeling that the music exists slightly “outside” normal reality. Instead of clear emotional resolution, the listener experiences atmosphere, wonder, mystery, and emotional imagination.

One of the most fascinating aspects of magical or mystical harmony is that it often avoids strong gravitational pull toward traditional tonal resolution. Instead of constantly resolving tension, the harmony tends to float, drift, evolve slowly, or remain emotionally suspended. This creates the sensation of entering an unknown emotional or imaginary space.

As with the previous articles, all examples can be transposed freely into different tonal centers while preserving their intervallic relationships and emotional behavior.

Example 1 - The Tritone

One of the fastest ways to create a magical, mysterious, or mischievous atmosphere in music is by using the tritone relationship. Throughout music history, the tritone has always carried a strange and unstable quality. In medieval times it was even called the “Devil’s Interval” because of its unsettling sound. In cinematic music, however, this instability becomes an incredibly powerful tool for creating fantasy-like harmonic movement and exotic textures.

A tritone is formed when two notes are separated by six semitones. The interesting thing about this interval is that it feels both connected and distant at the same time. Because of this, moving between harmonies built on tritone-related root notes immediately creates tension and unpredictability. The listener feels as if the music is constantly shifting between worlds instead of remaining safely inside a single scale.

This technique works in any key or starting note. Simply choose a root note, then move to another chord whose root lies a tritone away. For example, if your starting chord is built on C, the opposing tritone root would be F#. If your starting chord is A, the tritone partner becomes Eb. Every note has its own opposite tritone counterpart, making this approach highly flexible.

One effective technique is alternating between major chords built on these opposing roots. Another variation is moving chromatically to nearby related chords while preserving one or two common tones between them. Because certain notes remain shared while the harmony itself shifts dramatically, the result feels mysterious, ancient, and almost magical.

This type of chromatic movement is extremely common in fantasy and adventure scores because it allows composers to escape traditional harmonic expectations very quickly. With only a few carefully chosen chords, the music can suddenly feel enchanted, dangerous, playful, or otherworldly. The tritone becomes a doorway that temporarily pulls the listener outside the normal tonal world and into something far more mysterious.

Example 2 - Shifting Tonal Centers

Another way to create a dreamlike, magical, or surreal atmosphere is through the use of the whole tone scale. Unlike traditional major or minor scales, the whole tone scale is built entirely from whole steps. Because every interval is equal, the scale loses the strong sense of tonal gravity that normally pulls music toward resolution.

Example of a whole tone scale: C-D-E-F#-G#-A#

Since the intervals are perfectly symmetrical, the listener often feels suspended in an unstable harmonic space. There is no strong “home” chord, which makes the music sound floating, mysterious, and almost disconnected from reality. This is why whole tone harmony is frequently used in fantasy music, magical transformations, dream sequences, illusion scenes, or moments involving supernatural discovery.

An interesting aspect of whole tone harmony is that there are only two possible whole tone scales in the entire octave system. The second version simply begins one semitone higher:

C#-D#-F-G-A-B

Together, these two scales divide the octave completely. Composers can create fascinating harmonic movement by shifting between them or borrowing chords from both simultaneously.

One particularly effective technique is building major or augmented chords on consecutive whole tone notes. For example:

C → D → E → D → C → B

Even though the movement itself may appear simple, the harmonic effect feels unusual because the chords drift in parallel motion without following traditional tonal expectations. The listener experiences a constant sense of movement without ever fully arriving anywhere.

This technique becomes even more powerful when switching between the two whole tone collections. A progression may begin using chords derived from the first scale, then suddenly shift into the second collection chromatically. The result is a fluid and exotic harmonic texture that feels mystical, surreal, and constantly transforming — almost as if the music itself is bending reality underneath the listener.

Example 3 - Mediants

Yet another device for creating magical, mystical, or fantasy-like music is the use of chromatic mediant relationships. A chromatic mediant occurs when two chords are separated by a major or minor third, but belong to completely different harmonic areas. Unlike traditional chord progressions, these movements often ignore normal tonal expectations and instead focus on color, atmosphere, and emotional contrast.

Example: C major → Ab major → E major

At first glance, these chords appear unrelated. However, they often share one or two common tones or subtle interval relationships that allow the transition to feel strangely smooth despite the dramatic harmonic shift. This combination of familiarity and distance is what gives chromatic mediants their magical quality.

Traditional harmony usually moves in predictable ways: dominant to tonic, tension to resolution, or within a single scale. Chromatic mediants break these rules entirely. Instead of sounding logical or grounded, the harmony suddenly feels as if it is opening hidden doors into new tonal worlds. The listener experiences surprise without complete chaos.

This technique is extremely common in fantasy and adventure film scores because it creates the sensation of wonder, discovery, transformation, or supernatural power. A scene may begin in one emotional world, then instantly shift into another through a chromatic mediant change. Because the movement often preserves small common tones between chords, the transition still feels emotionally connected rather than random.

Chromatic mediants become especially effective when combined with large orchestral voicings, choir textures, suspended chords, or shimmering add9 harmonies. Even simple triads can sound enormous and cinematic when moved this way.

Another reason these progressions sound mystical is because they weaken the listener’s sense of tonal gravity. Instead of clearly hearing where the harmony wants to resolve, the music feels constantly suspended between multiple tonal centers. This floating harmonic behavior creates the sensation of ancient magic, hidden realms, or worlds existing beyond ordinary reality.

Example 4 - Glass Textures

The next technique for creating magical, mystical, or ethereal atmosphere in cinematic piano writing is the use of very high register “glass-like” textures.

These textures are usually created through combinations of:

Unlike deep bass tension or dense harmonic movement, this type of writing creates emotional atmosphere through lightness, resonance, and shimmering harmonic color. The result often feels celestial, dreamlike, magical, or spiritually elevated.

One especially powerful technique is combining neighboring half-step harmonies with broken arpeggio movement in the upper register. For example, slowly alternating between closely related chord shapes separated by half-steps can create beautiful harmonic shimmer and instability without sounding aggressive or dissonant in a traditional sense.

In the high register, even small intervallic movement becomes emotionally exaggerated because the ear perceives the tones as bright, delicate, and sparkling. Minor second relationships that might sound harsh in the lower register suddenly become mysterious and magical when played softly in the upper octaves with sustain pedal.

A famous example of this sound can be heard throughout the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone score composed by John Williams. The music frequently uses the celesta — a keyboard instrument with a soft bell-like tone — to create shimmering magical textures associated with wonder, mystery, childhood imagination, and the magical world itself.

The iconic Hedwig's Theme uses this approach extensively. The celesta’s delicate attack and resonant bell-like quality instantly create a feeling of magic and fantasy even before the harmony becomes more complex. High register spacing, neighboring tones, chromatic color, and flowing arpeggios all contribute to the mystical atmosphere.

The emotional effect becomes even stronger when these textures are contrasted against deep bass drones or dark harmonic movement underneath. The listener experiences a wide emotional and spatial contrast between the low and high registers, which enhances the cinematic scale and magical atmosphere even further.

In this fourth part of the series, we explored some of the many harmonic and textural techniques that can create magical, mystical, dreamlike, and fantasy-inspired atmospheres in cinematic piano music.

Unlike traditional harmonic writing that strongly pushes toward clear emotional resolution, many mystical cinematic textures rely instead on suspension, ambiguity, resonance, floating movement, and emotional openness. Rather than creating direct emotional statements, these techniques often evoke atmosphere, imagination, wonder, and the feeling of entering an unknown or imaginary world.

As with the previous examples, all of these techniques can be freely transposed and adapted into different tonal centers while preserving their intervallic relationships and atmospheric behavior.
